Mauritius Best Places To Work Remotely

If you could work from abroad while enjoying the country’s assets in your free time, would you take the plunge?

At least that’s what the latest Work From Wherever Index advises: “Swap gray cityscapes for olive groves, sunsets over the sea or bustling metropolises. Let our index show you which countries are best for remote work and travel experiences.”

This ranking, counts 111 countries, selected based on their remote working conditions and opportunities for unforgettable experiences.

The index is based on 22 factors subdivided into six categories such as health, safety, travel expenses, and social relationships, among others.  With this index, you can determine the country where it will be easiest to combine work and fun because without lying: “Working at home can be very productive. But at the same time, looking at the same view and only having the dog to bounce ideas off of can be extremely… uninspiring.”

Here’s what stands out in the rankings:

Mauritius is in fourth place. Before it, Portugal, Spain and Romania are ranked.

In terms of score, Portugal takes the first prize with a score of 100 out of 100. Spain follows with a score of 93 out of 100 and Romania 91.7 out of 100.

Mauritius has a final score of 90.1 out of 100.

Mauritius scored 70 out of 100 on the “Travel” criterion, while its best result was in the “Local Prices” category with a score of 84 out of 100.

On the other hand, the island registers a score of 2 out of 100 in the “Social Life” category. Mauritius scored much better in terms of “Health and Safety” with a score of 70 out of 100. In terms of “Remote Work”, it scores 56 out of 100.

Mauritius is the highest ranked country in the Africa/Middle East region, ahead of the Seychelles and the United Arab Emirates.

With a score of 69 out of 100 for the Seychelles and 57 out of 100 for the United Arab Emirates, these two countries are far behind the island, which has an overall score of 90.1 out of 100.

According to the study, “Mauritius ranked first among all countries in the Middle East and Africa and fourth worldwide. It scored highest in the region for its high-speed internet and free visa offer for remote work. It’s a safe country, with high political stability, low violence, clean air and very few serious car accidents. The weather is pleasant and the cost of living is affordable.”

To meet the increased demand for foreign tourists wishing to migrate to Mauritius for work, vacation or retirement, Mauritius launched its Premium Long Stay Visa in late 2020. This initiative attracted 1,500 individuals and families who took the opportunity to relocate to a country that offers a work-life balance with developed and advanced infrastructure, making it an ideal place for those looking to maximize their professional productivity and leisure time.

Foreigners who wish to stay in Mauritius for at least one year, alone or with their family, are eligible for the premium visa. This visa is intended for foreign professionals, investors, and retirees, among others. It allows them to stay on the island without entering the labor market. Foreign citizens must, in fact, continue to work remotely and prove that their money comes from outside. The premium visa is valid for one year and can be extended. It allows its holder to spend at least 180 days in Mauritius.

Mauritius offers a wide range of long-term rental opportunities, from serviced apartments to beachfront villas. Residents have the opportunity to purchase properties such as luxury villas, penthouses, apartments and duplexes through specific investment programs.
