Where Do French-Speaking Expatriates Settle in Mauritius?

When moving abroad with a family, questions about children’s education are understandably raised.
In Mauritius, the educational system and academic institutions are renowned for their quality. There are numerous options for schooling across the different educational cycles, regardless of whether an individual chooses to model their child’s education after the British or French educational systems.
In Mauritius, if you are travelling with a toddler or baby, there are various daycare facilities and preschools that provide different types of early childhood program philosophies, which help prepare the child for school.
The educational system in Mauritius has been largely influenced by the British education system, with English as the primary medium of instruction in public schools. In addition to the free public schools, there are a number of private and international primary schools that follow international curriculums.
For the expatriate community, international schools are a popular choice since they offer similar standards of schooling around the world, which provides a smooth transition for a child to adapt to the new environment. In addition, international schools have holidays aligned with the holidays in their country of origin.
In public institutions, secondary education is free and accredited by Cambridge University. Additionally, several private and international secondary schools present on the island are accredited with the French Baccalaureate or the International Baccalaureate.
A pre-vocational training or vocation education is also an option for school leavers and students outside of the academic stream.
Mauritius has a few international campuses and established collaborative institutions, providing franchising programs with leading universities around the world and attracting a large number of foreign and cosmopolitan students.
These guidelines are subject to amendment & should not be interpreted as definitive.
Generally, uniforms are mandatory at all schools, except in French schools.

Accordingly, the selection process is relatively strict: candidates must have good grades in core subjects, an open and curious personality, and a motivation for creation and communication. From the first year of the program, courses are taught either in English or in French. Therefore, from the first year, students must have a minimum level of B2 in French and English.
Those who need to improve their level in one of the two languages can take advantage of the courses offered at ICSIA (International Campus for Sustainable and Innovative Africa) in the six months preceding the start of the academic year in Mauritius.
