Mauritius, formally the Republic of Mauritius, is an Indian Ocean island republic located roughly 2,000 kilometers southeast of the African continent, east of Madagascar.
It consists of the main island, as well as Rodrigues, Agaléga, and St. Brandon. The island covers an area of 1865 km2 and represents about 91% of the total area of the Republic of Mauritius. The latter as regards to it, represents a total area of 2040 km2.
Mauritius has a coastline of approximately 330 kilometers, which is surrounded by a lagoon protected by a coral reef. Mauritius is part of The Mascarene Archipelago, as well as the islands of Rodrigues and Réunion.
The Mauritian economy, once dominated by sugar cane monocultures and then by the textile industry, has slowly evolved into promising sectors such as new technologies, tourism, finance and real estate investment.
Mauritius has been drawing prominent names in new technology for a few years now, lured by the island’s capacities, the facilities put in place by the authorities for investment and even the salary costs.
Tourism has reached an important level of quality, has acquired an international reputation and generates considerable inflows of foreign currency while contributing to the development of employment. Mauritius is aggressively boosting this sector by increasing hotel capacity and welcoming new airline companies.
In terms of foreign investment and job creation, the development of luxury villas also contributes significantly to economic growth. In the coming decades, the blue economy, the ecological problem and socio-economic distribution will be the main themes to take into account.
Mauritius is an island with multiple origins and cultures due to a population that descended from English or French colonizers, African or Malagasy slaves, Indian workers or Chinese traders.
Nevertheless, we can distinguish several ethnic origins :
English is the official language of the Republic of Mauritius, a legacy of the island’s 150-year relationship with the British monarchy. The administration and official documents are all written in English.
The two most widely spoken languages in Mauritius are French and Mauritian Creole.
Mauritius has a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 25 to 35°C and trade winds blowing from the southeast.
Temperatures are higher during the rainy season, which runs from November to April (summer in the southern hemisphere) and lower during the dry season, which runs from May to October (winter). Summer temperatures can easily exceed 30 °C.
These temperatures, however, are bearable due to a gentle sea breeze in the west and a stronger wind on the east coast. At this time of year, the central plateau offers a bit more coolness.
The southern winter is marked by significant temperature variations between day and night, ranging from 22 to 27°C, with sunshine that is sometimes obscured by scattered clouds. On the other hand, temperatures drop considerably when the sun sets, to 19°C along the coasts and 16°C on the central plateau.
High temperatures, high humidity, and an unstable atmosphere can all contribute to the formation of tropical depressions between January and March
